February 24, 2024

The United States strongly condemned the Sudanese government’s decision to block humanitarian aid from Chad and reports of looting by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In a statement issued today, the US expressed deep concern about the growing humanitarian crisis and called for immediate action.

“We are deeply troubled by the Sudanese Armed Forces’ (SAF) recent decision to restrict cross-border aid from Chad and reports that they are obstructing assistance from reaching communities controlled by the RSF,” the statement read. “Furthermore, the looting of homes, markets, and aid warehouses by the RSF is unacceptable.”

The U.S. also raised concerns about the harassment of humanitarian workers and the overall hindering of life-saving aid deliveries. They urged both the SAF and RSF to immediately allow unhindered access to all parts of Sudan.

“We remind the SAF and RSF of their obligations under international humanitarian law and their commitments in the Jeddah Declaration to protect civilians and facilitate aid deliveries,” the statement added.

The U.S. further condemned the Sudanese government’s crackdown on dissent, including restricting internet access, stoking interethnic conflict, and targeting activists and journalists.

“We unequivocally condemn these acts, as well as pervasive rape, torture, and other reprehensible violations against Sudanese civilians,” the statement emphasized. “Sudanese civilians must be free to organize themselves and establish a civilian government that truly represents the Sudanese people.”

The U.S. statement concludes by applauding the courageous efforts of humanitarian organizations and grassroots groups working in SudanThis strong condemnation by the U.S. highlights the international community’s growing concern about the deteriorating situation in Sudan and calls for immediate action to address the humanitarian crisis and protect civilians.
