Kenya confirmed on Monday that it had deported four Turkish refugees following Ankara’s extradition request, despite warnings from Amnesty International about potential persecution in Turkey.

Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs stated that the extradition was approved due to strong bilateral ties with Turkey. The ministry added that it had received assurances that the deported individuals would be treated according to both national and international law.

Amnesty International, however, expressed concerns on Saturday, warning that the deportees could face severe human rights violations. The organization highlighted broader worries regarding the safety of refugees and asylum seekers in Kenya.

While Kenya reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of its 780,000 refugees, mainly from Somalia, the identities and the reasons behind the Turkish refugees’ extradition were not disclosed.
