Israel wants normalization with Somalia to surveil Red sea: Expert

2022/07/13

An expert on Israel has said that one of the reasons why Israel seeks closer ties with Somalia is Israel’s need for maritime surveillance because Yemen’s Ansarullah is surveilling the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea.

Israel’s normalization with the Arab countries started when Abraham accords were publicized, Mohammad Jafar Razavi told ILNA.

In the meantime, the normalization of relations that have occurred is not considered very successful and deeply rooted, he said, adding that the said process is gradually being completed and new countries will join it.

Israel considered the totality of Abraham agreements and the normalization of ties with Arab countries as a diplomatic achievement with multiple sides, he stressed.

In recent days, news has been published that Somalia intended to join Abraham agreements. Note that Somalia’s importance to Israel is because of its geographical location, he said.

Undoubtedly, the horn of Africa, where Somalia is situated, is a key area, he said.

Surveillance of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden from Somalian soil is the most important factor that Israel is emphasizing, he added.

The issue of maritime surveillance is one of Tel Aviv’s reasons for getting closer to Somalia because Yemen’s Ansarullah is directly surveilling the Gulf of Aden and the Red Sea, he noted, adding that this is exactly why Israel has been making efforts.
