The Commander of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), Mohamed Hamdan Dagalowould have been killed. This was said by the Sudanese ambassador in Libya, Ibrahim Mohamed Ahmed, in televised statements that have sparked a wave of controversy among Sudanese in recent hours. The diplomat underlined that the information on the alleged death of General “Hemeti”, architect of the attempted coup against the president of the Sovereign Transitional Council, as well as army chief, Abdel Fattah al Burhan, would be reliable, but did not clarify the date of the suspected “homicide”. The ambassador denied that the information was shared by President Al Burhan, with whom Ahmed said he had no contact.
The Saudi-owned television station “Al Arabiya” reports that many Sudanese users on social networks have defined the ambassador’s words as “irresponsible”, asking for his immediate dismissal because he is “unfit to represent the country”. Sudan has slipped into a civil war between the regular army and the RSF since last April. Rumors have circulated several times – always denied – about the killing of both Dagalo and Al Burhan. Regional and international mediations have so far failed to arrive at a sustainable ceasefire, despite warnings from the United Nations that the conflict “creates an emergency humanitarian situation of enormous proportions”.
