U.S.-controlled Erdoğan, a “security Issue” for Turkey – fmr PM Davutoğlu

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has become a security problem after changing from an independent leader to a figure controlled by the United States, the leader of opposition Future Party Ahmet Davutoğlu said on Wednesday.

Erdoğan is “no longer the person who once commanded the world’s attention with the ‘one minute’ lash out,’’ Davutoğlu said in a video shared on the official Future Party Twitter account.

The Future Party leader was referring to the Turkish president’s walkout protest against then-Israeli President Shimon Peres at the 2009 Davos Economic Summit.

Erdoğan is being controlled by Washington, “through threats, his assets being presented to Congress, in addition to a number of files (on him),’’ the former prime minister and once Erdoğan ally said.

Both the Senate sanctions package and the one already passed by the House of Representatives in 2019 demanded a report on assets of Erdoğan and his family members to be inspected and the sources of to be reported to the Congress. The bill was ultimately halted by the Majority Leader and Trump ally Mitch McConnell at the Senate.

A senior official who had worked on one of these bills in the Senate told Ahval that the report was requested due to suspicions the Turkish president had been involved in corrupt activites.

“This is a very serious security problem for Turkey,’’ the Future Party leader added.

Davutoğlu was sidelined by Erdoğan in 2016 and forced to resign as prime minister of Turkey after serving 20 months in office.

After resiging from Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party, Davutoğlu in Dec. 2019 established the Future Party, which is seen as an alternative, conservative home for voters dissatisfied with Erdoğan’s 18-year rule.
