Female lecturer burned to death in Istanbul

A man named Kemal Delbe set female academician Aylin Sözer on fire in the Maltepe district of Istanbul after pouring flammable substances on her, BBC Turkish reported on Tuesday.

Sözer was allegedly the man’s ex-girlfriend.

The murdered woman is reported to have worked as a lecturer at a private university.

People in the same neighbourhood attempted to lynch Kemal Delbe when the police took him into custody.

Meanwhile, firefighters started to extinguish the fire that broke out in the flat. Citizens and children in other apartments were evacuated due to smoke filling of the building.

The murdered Sözer strongly opposed violence against women during a tv appearance in April 2019.

Three hundred and eighty women were murdered in Turkey in 2020, a watchdog Counter Monument documented. Turkish Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, speaking at a police event last month, said murders of women were exaggerated.
